Dance, Associate of Arts Degree
Students in the Dance Program train in ballet and modern dance techniques as well as the fundamentals of music and acting. The teaching approach is designed to facilitate a healthy and injury-free performer, ease in learning other dance styles and choreography, and the development of the dancer as both an interpretive and creative artist. Students perform in a dance ensemble each semester where they have an opportunity to present original work and to collaborate with student musician and actors. All technique classes have live accompaniment as do the ensemble performances. Cecil College has an articulation agreement with Towson University (audition required) to facilitate the transfer of credits directly into one of its degree programs.
- Designed to help each student find and refine their personal creativity, the Performing Arts Program curriculum approach is integrative and collaborative. Students obtain a solid academic foundation in classical and contemporary technique training and performance as well as practical career skills preparation and general education courses.
- Based at the Elkton Station facility, small classes with individualized attention take place in the beautiful Performing Arts Hall, Dance Studio and Music Studio. Seasoned educators and professional artists, the faculty work closely with each student to help them to achieve their personal goals. Master classes, performances, internships and special events round out the program offerings and provide a strong connection to the regional arts community.
What is distinctive?
- Each semester all performing arts majors perform together as part of the Station Players, the interdisciplinary student company. In their final semester students participate in a Capstone Project under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
- All performing arts majors also take Performance and Career Skills where students gain career preparation skills, as well as create a promotional kit and participate in mock auditions and interviews.
