College Prep

• Why do I need to buy a textbook?

  The book contains samples and practice tests that will help you prepare for the SAT exam. The same book can be used for both the verbal prep and math prep classes so if you sign up for both you do not need to purchase an additional book.

• How do I find out where and when SAT tests are being offered?

  Visit CollegeBoard.org to get a list of SAT test dates.

Foreign Languages

• Do Lifelong Learning courses offer Transcript Information or a Letter of Attendance?

  Lifelong Learning courses do not offer letter grades. Certificates of successful completion may be earned in courses that require successful demonstration of competencies and/or a skills assessment. Other courses offer letters that verify hours of attendance. Contact the Lifelong Learning Department at learning4life@cecil.edu for a Letter of Attendance.

• Where do I purchase textbooks for my class?

  Textbooks for courses are available at the Cecil College Bookstore located across the street from the North East Campus in College Crossing at 3135 Joseph Biggs Memorial Highway. You may purchase texts at the Cecil College Bookstore or another bookstore of your choice. If the course description notes "Textbook required," check with the Bookstore (410-287-4740) for the name of the text. Textbooks will not be available from the instructor on the first night of class nor can they purchased at Elkton Station. It will be your responsibility to purchase your text prior to the course to be ready for a successful learning experience.

GED

• How long does it take to earn a GED?

  The amount of time varies by student. Many factors affect how long it will take to be ready to sit for the GED examination.

• How much does it cost for a GED?

  The total cost will vary for students. GED level instruction costs $80.00 for each 60 hour cycle of instruction and the GED examination itself costs $45.00 each time you take it.

• If I fail one part of the GED test, do I have to take the entire test over?

  No. You only retake the part(s) you did not pass. When the new version of the GED examination is released that will change.

• How do I sign up to take the GED?

  You must fill out and send a GED application to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation with the $45.00 testing fee. Applications can be found at www.dllr.maryland.gov/gedmd.

• What is the OPT?

  OPT refers to the Official GED Practice Test. This test helps verify that a student is ready for the actual GED examination. The OPT is administered the first Friday of every month at Elkton Station from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and when necessary by appointment. There is a $15.00 fee to take it. Please call the GED Office at 410/392-3366 to register.

• Is the GED test hard? ...easy?

  That is a hard question to answer. For some students it would be easy, but for many students it would be a very hard test to pass all five subject areas.

• Do colleges accept the GED?

  Yes. A few four year institutions might require a certain score higher than the minimum passing score.
