Seahawks Gain Tough Win against ASA
The Cecil men's basketball team managed a close 72-66 win against the visiting ASA Avengers from Brooklyn, NY on Monday, February 27th. Playing without starters Tom Sharkey and Charles Burley, the Seahawks were caught in a tight matchup that saw five lead changes and eight ties in just the first half, a total of eight lead changes and twelve ties throughout the game. Read More.
Cecil held leads throughout much of the first half, but never by more than seven points, which they accomplished at the 9:36 mark when a Donn Hill basket made it 25-18. Two minutes later, a 7-0 run by ASA tied the score. In the final 7:12 of the half, Cecil regained the lead twice and ASA once. The Avengers held a two-point lead until a fast-break basket by Anthony Moe just before time expired allowed the Seahawks to pull even at 35 all. In the second half, it was ASA that led much of the way, but they also could not build a comfortable margin. At the 16:38 mark, a Sa'Quan Davis free-throw gave ASA an eight-point lead, the biggest of the game, making the score 45-37. Except for a brief one-point lead at the 4:43 mark resulting from a Khaalis Coppock-Bey free-throw, the Sea Hawks either trailed or were tied in the half until the 2:00 mark, when Coppock-Bey added two more free-throws and gave Cecil a 66-64 lead that they would hang on to.
The outcome of the game resulted largely from two factors. One was Cecil's ability to find its way to the free-throw line in the last seven minutes of the game, when Brandon Bobb-Jones, Coppock-Bey, and Akeem Echols combined for ten of Cecil's final nineteen points. The second was the lock-down defense Cecil threw up, limiting the Avengers to a mere seven points in the final seven and a half minutes of the game.
Coppock-Bey led all scorers with 21 points, while Anthony Moe added 15 and Echols 10. ASA was led by Sa'Quan Davis (20 points) and Rysheen Dorn (14 points). Cecil improves to 25-5 on the season; ASA falls to 18-12. The Seahawks open Region XX Tournament action at Hagerstown CC on Friday, March 2 against an opponent to be determined.

Seahawks Top Frederick CC, Advance in MD JUCO Tournament
The second-seeded Cecil men's basketball team defeated the visiting fifteenth-seeded Frederick CC Cougars 78-57 on Tuesday, February 14 in the opening round of the MD JUCO Tournament. Read More.
The Seahawks jumped ahead early on, but never by more than eight points, which was their margin at the half. But the opening of the second half saw a more determined Seahawk defense hold the Cougars to just eight points in the first seven minutes and thirty-seven seconds as Cecil built a 52-34 lead. During that stretch, Anthony Moe scored four consecutive baskets for the Seahawks in just one minute and twenty-four seconds; he would add a fifth a little over three minutes later to spark a Cecil offense that had temporarily lost its momentum. Then the Cougars started catching up, led in part by Danny Hennigan's two threes and three baskets by Jamal McCoy. By the time Cecil Coach Rashad Brooks called a timeout at 4:07, the lead had dwindled to 58-51. During that timeout, "We talked about rotations on defense and execution on offense," said Brooks. The Seahawks finished out the game with a 20-6 run to win comfortably. During that run, Charles Burley took charge, scoring nine points; Brandon Bobb-Hill added five more. "I take my hat off to Charles Burley. He put us on his back and carried us the rest of the way. I can't take credit for that," said Coach Brooks.
Leading scorers for Cecil were Khaalis Coppock-Bey (22), Moe (16), Bobb-Jones, (14), and Burley (13). Frederick was led by Scott Johnson (15) and Manny Ogunfolu and Kevin Smith, each with 11. Cecil will meet seventh-seeded Chesapeake College on Friday, February 17 in the Quarter-Final round of the tournament at Frederick CC.

Seahawks Struggle, But Manage To Defeat MC-Rockville
At times, the Cecil men's basketball team appeared to be in jeopardy of having its fourteen-game winning streak broken by the visiting Knights of Montgomery College-Rockville, but the Seahawks managed to take charge in the second half and hang on to win 82-78 on Tuesday, February 7. Read More.
The Knights, who came in ranked tenth in the MD JUCO Conference with a 7-7 record, played a tight zone defense that, especially in the first half, forced the Seahawks to take far more outside shots than Cecil coach Rashad Brooks wanted. "We would like to take high-percentage shots, but their zone defense shut off passing lanes and made it difficult to drive into the lane," said Brooks, who noted that in the first half, his team had more three-point attempts than layups. Brooks also praised the Rockville team for doing "an excellent job of pushing the ball down our throats, of directing the tempo" of the game, adding that he was disappointed "they were able to get the ball to the rim as easily as they were." All this, coupled with Rockville's hitting eleven three-pointers, provided some serious problems for the home team.
The game stayed close throughout, and neither team ever gained a commanding lead. A basket by Chris Gee at the 15:40 mark of the first half gave Rockville an 11-10 lead, and over the next minute and forty seconds, Cecil would tie the score twice. A Charles Burley three-pointer at the 12:49 mark gave the Seahawks a 16-13 advantage, but a little over two minutes later, Eric Satchel II dropped in a three to regain the lead for Rockville, 19-18. With 4:15 remaining in the half, Tom Sharkey's basket gave Cecil the lead again, and they would go on to take a 39-37 lead at the half. The second half initially followed this same pattern, with two tied scores and two more lead changes. Then, at the 10:15 mark, Brandon Bobb-Jones hit a basket that gave Cecil a 57-55 lead, and they would not trail again. With 3:46 left to play, a Khaalis Coppock-Bey three created a ten-point lead, 73-63, the biggest lead by either team in the game. Two Rockville treys in the final ten seconds, one by Dante Serile and one by Eric Cottonham Jr., tightened the score but failed to alter the outcome.
Cecil was led by Bobb-Jones, with a game-high 24 points , Sharkey (10), Burley (14), and Donn Hill (10). Top scorers for Rockville were Satchel ll (18), Chris Gee and Alim Stewart (11 each), and Rene Osman (10).
The Seahawks are now 15-1 in conference, 21-4 overall. Rockville falls to 7-8, 12-13. As his team awaits the MD JUCO Tournament next week, Coach Brooks referred to the renowned NBA coach, Phil Jackson, who stated that a team wants to have momentum going into postseason tournament play. The Seahawks, winners of fifteen in a row and 19 of their last 20, certainly have that.

Seahawks Run Win Streak to Fourteen, Overpower MC-Germantown
In a game that often seemed part track meet, part old-west shootout, the Cecil College men proved to have faster runners and more ammunition as they dominated the visiting Griffins of Montgomery County-Germantown, 102-84 on Monday, February 6. The Seahawks led from wire to wire, building an 18 point lead less than ten minutes into the game. That lead would get as high as 26 points at the 11:30 mark of the second half. Read More.
Both teams frequently applied full-court pressure and often forced turnovers leading to scores. Both teams pushed the ball up and down the court and fired off shots. But Cecil always got the better of it and was never seriously threatened. The closest Germantown could come to catching up occurred when a Keenan Thompkins basket cut the lead to 87-75 with 3:58 left in the game. But Cecil quickly responded with a three by Alex Behnke, a basket by Thaddeus Fauntleroy, and two threes and a two-pointer by Jasper Holloman, outscoring the Griffins 13-2 in under three minutes to push the lead back to 23.
The high-scoring game allowed ten Seahawks to record points; they were led by Brandon Bobb-Jones (16), Donn Hill (15), Tom Sharkey (13) and Behnke and Khaalis Coppock-Bey (12 points each). Germantown scorers were led by Nicholas Brown and Thompkins (17 points each), Mor Ndiaye (12), and David Johnson (11).
The Seahawks, winners of 18 of their last 19 games, improve to 14-1 in conference, 20-4 overall. The Griffins fall to 1-14, 7-16. The Cecil men host Montgomery CC-Rockville on Tuesday, February 7 at 7 p.m.; that game will be preceded at 5 p.m. by the Lady Seahawks' game against the Montgomery CC-Rockville women, currently ranked first in the Md JUCO conference.

Seahawks Stay Hot, Defeat Baltimore City CC
The Cecil men's basketball team ran their winning streak to thirteen with a home 78-72 victory over the talented Baltimore City CC Jaguars on Saturday, February 4. The Seahawks, ranked second in Maryland JUCO, have now won seventeen of their last eighteen games and are 13-1 in conference, 19-4 overall. Baltimore, ranked fourth, is 10-5, 16-9. Read More.
The game was fast-paced and hotly contested, with a total of eight lead changes and eight ties; at no point did either team's lead exceed nine points. Except for a brief one-point lead six minutes into the game, Baltimore trailed for most of the first half, until two Sean Farr free-throws gave them a 28-26 lead with 6:32 left before intermission. In the final minute and a half, Cecil regained the lead twice, with two free-throws by Khaalis Coppock-Bey and baskets by Jonathan McNair and Donn Hill, but a three-pointer by Zafir Williams at the buzzer sent Baltimore into the locker room with a 37-36 advantage.
The two teams stayed close in the second half, and it wasn't until the 13:00 mark that a Charles Burley three-pointer tied the game and, shortly thereafter, a Brandon Bobb-Jones trey gave Cecil a 50-47 lead. At the 7:45 mark, a basket and free-throw by Baltimore's Warren Wright gave them a short-lived 58-57 advantage. But then, the Seahawk defense asserted itself, limiting the Jaguars to just three points over the next six minutes; meanwhile, Thaddeus Fauntleroy scored 7 points and Jasper Holloman and Tom Sharkey added 3 points each, giving Cecil a 70- 61 lead. Although Baltimore closed the gap to 70-68 with just over a minute left on two Karrell Goines free-throws, a basket by Khaalis Coppock-Bey, four free-throws by Donn Hill, and two more by Burley preserved the win for the Seahawks.
Cecil scoring was led by Koppock-Bey, whose 21 points included four three-pointers, Hill (18 points), and Fauntleroy (14). Baltimore was paced by Wright (21), Carlos Smith (16), and Williams (14). The Seahawks next play a home game against Montgomery County-Germantown on Monday, February 6 at 7 p.m. (a makeup of a previously postponed game) and then host Montgomery County-Rockville on Tuesday, February 7 at 7 p.m.
