Chesapeake Takes Doubleheader from Seahawks
The visiting Skipjacks of Chesapeake College swept two from the Cecil College baseball team Saturday, April 28, 6-5 and 5-0. Read More.
In game one, the Skipjacks took a one-run lead in the first when Kameron Stewart doubled, Ricky Brady was HBP, and Lane Farmer doubled down the left-field line. The Seahawks responded in the second when Matt Armour doubled, stole third, and scored on Michael Defeo's single to right. Chesapeake immediately regained the lead in the third, with a lot of help from the Cecil defense. With one on and one out, a Brady grounder was misplayed, putting runners on second and third. Another error loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly by Lane Farmer brought in a run. A third error on a ground ball plated one more run, giving Chesapeake a 3-1 advantage. That lead was extended in the fifth when Joel Rowe singled, Kevin Loftis doubled, and Casey Joseph homered to drive in three more. In the bottom of the fifth, the Seahawks fought back with a Logan Engle single, a Josh Hampton double, and a two-run single by Joel Buchko. They provided an exciting finish in their last at bat when, with two outs, Hampton and Buchko hit back-to-back solo home runs to make it 6-5, but Skipjack starter and winner R J Angermier got Morgan Barger to ground out, ending the game. Cecil's starter Richard O'Donald suffered the loss.
With the loss of the second game, Cecil fell to 18-8 in conference, 33-18 overall. Chesapeake improved to 16-9, 25-16.

Seahawks Sweep another Double-Header
The Cecil College baseball team swept its fourth consecutive double-header by defeating the visiting Frederick CC Courgars 7-2 and 10-6 on Saturday, April 21. Read More.
Game one was highlighted by errorless defense and the pitching of Cecil starter Jordan Santak, who allowed four singles, three walks, and one HBP in the win. Frederick scored its only runs in the fifth inning on a single by John Dockins that drove in Matt DeWitt, who had walked, and a ground out by Justus Miller that brought home Wil Cordero, who had singled and advanced to second on a catcher interference call. The Seahawks staked Santak to a first-inning 3-0 lead when Gabe Fellin and Josh Hampton led off with walks and Joel Buchko singled to center, scoring Fellin. An error allowed Hampton to score, and Jon Karns' sacrifice fly plated Buchko. After adding a run in the third off of Frederick starter Logan Johnson, who was charged with the loss, the Seahawks put the game out of reach in the sixth. Hampton's lead-off solo homer, combined with consecutive singles by Paul Groff, Morgan Barger, and Tyler Albert, along with a sacrifice fly by Karns, added the final three runs.
"I was trying to keep my pitch count down, trying to throw strikes and let my defense do the work for me. I knew my guys would have my back," said Santak, whose complete-game win was his third victory of the season. He added, "PJ (shortstop Paul Groff) had a real nice game today. I usually get a lot of ground balls, so my infielders have to be on their game, too."
In game two, Cecil compressed all of its offense into the first two innings while the Cougars chipped away during the next four innings. In the first, a double, a single, a walk, and another single by Hampton, Buchko, Barger, and Groff, respectively, brought in three runs. After a Greg Depanfillis single, Jon Karns struck the big blow with a three-run homer, and the Seahawks had a 6-0 lead. "I was sitting on a fast ball, 2-0 count," said Karns, who had 5 RBI's for the day. In the second, singles by Fellin, Buchko, Barger, and Groff, along with a sacrifice fly by Depanfillis, added three more. Two consecutive batters HBP and one more single by Logan Engle tacked on another run, making it a 10-0 game. But that would be the end of the Cecil scoring, all of which came off of Cougar starter Colin Maye; relievers Greg Dayhoff and Jack Nazarewycz held the Seahawks at bay from then on. Frederick struck back in the third, when Brandon Costa reached first on an error, Jon Dockins doubled, and Josh Swirchak scratched out an infield single to load the bases. A ground-out by Garrett Sanders drove in one run, and Cordero's single to left plated two more. Brody Tennant led off the fourth with a solo shot over the leftfield fence, making it a 10-4 game. That lead narrowed further in the sixth when a Brandon Costa double drove in Matt Dewitt, who had singled, and Cal Hogan, who reached on an error. But Cecil starter and winning pitcher Cody Albright put the Cougars down in order in the seventh to complete the game.
Despite the Frederick comeback attempt, Albright said he wasn't worried. "I knew we had it. With ten runs at the beginning of the game, that's a huge lead. That really buries a team. It was just a matter of whether we could pull it together at the end." Albright gave up eight hits, four of them for extra bases, but he made the Cougars earn their runs, allowing only one walk.
The sweep brings Cecil's record to 17-5 in conference, 32-15 overall. Frederick is now 7-14, 28-19.

Seahawk Pitching Shuts Down Rockville with No-hitter and One-Hitter
The Cecil College baseball team swept a double-header from Montgomery-Rockville on Sunday, April 15th, blanking the visiting Knights 4-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the second, a shortened five-inning contest. It came on the heels of a two-game sweep of Montgomery-Germantown the day before. Read More.
Seahawk starter Jarrett Shaffer was in total control of the first game, striking out eleven and walking only two while hurling a no-hitter. The two walks represented the only batters to reach base for the visiting Knights. "It felt good throwing today. I had a lot of movement on [my pitches]," said Shaffer, who acknowledged that a no-hitter was on his mind as the game progressed and may have caused him to lose focus in the fifth inning when he issued the two walks. "My catcher [Joel Buchko] came out and talked to me and calmed me down, told me 'Keep doing what you're doing.'" Shaffer's teammates provided the offensive backup, beginning with one run in the third on consecutive doubles by Jon Karns and Michael Defeo. They manufactured two more runs in the fourth when Paul Groff was HBP and stole second. After Morgan Barger was HBP, a series of pitches in the dirt eventually allowed Groff to score and Barger to advance to third. Matt Cleary then walked and stole second, with Barger racing home on the throw to second. The final run came in the sixth on three consecutive singles by Matt Armour, Scott Rhoades, and Karns. Rockville's Damian Cruz pitched a complete game and took the loss.
Game two saw more futility for the Rockville batters as Cecil starter Erik Brown went the distance, yielding just one hit, a single by Casey Fitzgerald, while walking four and hitting one batter. No Rockville runners advanced beyond second. Starting his first game of the season, Brown said that he just worked on keeping the ball down and letting the fielders make the plays. He added that his best pitch was probably the fastball, but that "the breaking ball was there sometimes to get them off balance."
Brown benefitted from plenty of run support. In the first, a Josh Hampton solo homer and a bases-loaded walk to Greg Depanfillis scored two. The next inning, after the first three batters drew walks, a Joel Buchko sacrifice fly brought in a run, and Paul Groff followed with a three-run home run, making it a 6-0 game. Braden Bond, in relief of Rockville starter Matt Cononie, pitched a scoreless fourth inning for the Knights, but he was followed in the fifth by Kevin Shay, who gave up a three-run home run to Hampton, creating a 9-0 margin. After two Seahawks reached base on errors, a Josh Tatnall base hit brought in the tenth run to end the game.
Groff, who noted that his home run came on an inside fastball that was "up a little bit," praised his team, saying, "We had really good defense today, and the pitching has been very good. We didn't give a lot of run support at the beginning of the year, but the bats are starting to come alive." Hampton, whose two homers also came on fastballs, described the Rockville pitching as "a little slower than usual" and said, "I just had to adjust." He added that he is pleased with the progress of the team this season: "We're on track to do really good things right now." Cecil, riding a seven-game win streak, is 15-3 in conference, 30-13 overall. Rockville slips to 3-16, 7-21.

Seahawks Dominate Prince George's CC, 14-4
On Thursday, April 12th, in a game the outcome of which was never in doubt, the Cecil College baseball team continued its winning ways with another impressive offensive display, defeating the visiting Owls of Prince George's CC. The game ended in the seventh inning with Cecil leading by ten runs. Read More.
Cecil took a first-inning lead with a Joel Buchko single that drove in Gabe Fellin, who had walked, and added three more in the second when Morgan Barger and Greg Depanfillis walked and then scored on a Josh Tatnall liner to right that was mishandled, resulting in a triple. Michael Defeo's sacrifice fly plated Tatnall, making it a 4-0 game. The heavy damage, however, was accomplished in the third, starting with another error, a hit batter, Paul Groff's one-run single, Barger's one-run double, and Depanfillis' two-run single. The inning continued with Matt Cleary's double to center, a walk to Fellin, and Josh Hampton's bases-clearing double, running the score to 11-0. In the fifth, one more run was added when Groff reached second on a double and later scored on Fellin's ground-out. In the sixth, singles by Matt Armour and Groff and a sacrifice fly by Depanfillis added another.
Meanwhile, Cecil starter and winning pitcher, Rob Pennypacker, was cruising, shutting out the Owls and limiting them to three walks and one double through the first five frames, during which no Prince George's runners advanced beyond second base. "I was really just going fastball, curveball. I threw a few change-ups and two sliders the entire game," said the sophomore lefthander, who added that having a huge lead made his job a lot easier. However, he noted that he did "get a little bit tied, [and] lost a little on the fastball in the later innings," which is when the Owls finally broke through. In the sixth, a walk to Dale Davis, a triple off the centerfield fence by Jordon Martinez, and a single by Josh Powell scored two. Seahawk Chris Moran relieved in the seventh and gave up two more runs when Brandon Johnson singled, Kaine Colon was HBP, Davis walked, and Marinez and Powell each singled in a run.
Entering the bottom of the seventh with a 13-4 advantage, the Seahawks needed only one run to invoke the ten-run rule and end the game. Leadoff batter Tyler Albert was HBP, Logan Engle and Groff both singled to left, and Scott Rhoades singled to right-center to provide that game-winning run.
With this win, the sixth of their last seven games, Cecil improves to 10-3 in conference, 25-13 overall, while PGCC falls to 4-14, 6-22.

Seahawks Win Two Slugfests against Del Tech-Georgetown
On a day when the wind was blowing out and both teams had on their hitting shoes, the Cecil men's baseball team swept a double-header from the visiting Roadrunners of Del Tech-Georgetown by scores of 12-11 and 13-12. Read More.
In game one, starter and eventual winner Jordan Santack found it tough going in the first inning, giving up singles to the first two batters and a home run to the third, Bobby Kissner. A first-inning single by Paul Groff gave the Seahawks a run, but two singles and two walks in the third added another run for Del Tech, giving them a 4-1 lead. Then, the Seahawks exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third. After Michael Defeo was hit by a pitch to lead off, Josh Hampton singled, Joel Buchko homered, Groff singled, Morgan Barger homered, Tyler Albert singled, and Josh Tatnall homered, giving Cecil an 8-4 lead. The visitors added a run in the fifth, but Cecil countered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning on Tatnall's second two-run homer, a Defeo single, and doubles by Hampton and Butchko.
Del Tech added one more in the sixth off of reliever Hunter Ressler and set the stage for a nail-biting conclusion in the top of the seventh. Trailing 12-6, with their first two batters retired, the Roadrunners began a comeback when Tyler Troyer singled, Trevor Wilkins doubled, and Zach Gemberling walked. Sean Lewis lined a sharp base hit to center field which went through and ended up as a bases-clearing triple. A double by Kissner plated one more run and brought on reliever Jarrett Shaffer, who gave up a one-run single to Dylan Schupe before striking out the final batter and saving the win.
Game two again provided high-octane hitting. Joel Butchko's solo homer in the first and Morgan Barger's double, followed by Greg Depanfillis' home run in the second gave the Seahawks an early 3-0 lead. Del Tech picked up two in the third, but Cecil responded immediately when a series of errors and a single by Barger brought in two more runs. In the fourth, it was Del Tech's turn. Cecil starter D J Park walked the leadoff batter Tim Mathias and, after striking out the next two, gave up a double to Trevor Wilkins, an infield hit to Tyler Troyer, a walk to Sean Lewis, and a three-run home run to Bobby Kissner, giving the Roadrunners a 7-5 lead. Park had more problems in the fifth, giving up a walk and three singles and two runs. Reliever Ian Cole's wild pitch let in another run and Kissner's double drove in two more, giving Del Tech a 12-5 lead. Cecil scored twice in their half of the fifth with Groff's double and Barger's home run, and another dramatic finish was set up.
Down by five, the Seahawks started the long uphill climb in the sixth when Scott Rhoades led off with a single and Hampton walked. Del Tech starter Brendan Parsons was relieved by Jermemy Hutchinson, who walked Butchko, and gave up a two-run double to Groff. After Barger walked, the second reliever, Trevor Wilkins, gave up a line-drive to DePanfillis that handcuffed the centerfielder and went for a triple, driving in three. A wild pitch brought in Depanfillis with what proved to be the winning run. However, the drama continued into Del Tech's final at bat as Seahawk reliever Erik Brown, with one out, issued a walk to Sean Lewis and faced Bobby Kissner, who on the day had garnered two home runs, two doubles, and a hefty nine RBI's. Kissner took a called third strike and Lewis, attempting to steal second, was thrown out by Cecil catcher Joel Butchko to end the game. Ian Cole, who relieved in the fifth and sixth, got the win.
Offensive standouts abounded for Cecil during the day. In game one, Josh Tatnall had two home runs, a single and four RBI's. In game two, Greg Depanfillis had a home run, two singles, and five RBI's. In the double-header, Butchko had two home runs, a double, and a single with five RBI's; Morgan Barger had a home run, a double, a single with five RBI's and three runs scored. Cecil is now 9-3 in Md Juco, 24-13 overall. They have won 12 of their last 15 games.

Cecil Stages Late Comeback to Defeat Essex
The Cecil baseball team saw a four-run lead melt away in the seventh inning, only to bounce back in the eight and gain an 8-5 home win over CCBC-Essex on Tuesday, April 3rd. Read More.
The Seahawks broke on top in the fourth on Gabe Fellin's solo homer to left and added three more in the fifth on Josh Tatnall's two-run home run and Joel Buchko's one-run single, giving them a 4-0 lead.
Although Cecil starter D J Park pitched well, shutting out the visitors through the first six innings, his coach Charlie O'Brien noted that he was not as sharp as he often is. In the seventh inning, Park ran into trouble when his fielded a bunt attempt by Maikel Reyes and overthrew first base, allowing Reyes to move to second. Another bunt was popped up and fell in for a single, and a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third. Park was relieved at that point by Ian Cole, who could not get the job done. After walking Michael Krannebitter, he gave up a one-run single to Stephen Brooks and a two-run double to Jake Pequignot. Greg Myers' ground-out and Cameron Lauf's single to left plated two more, and suddenly Essex had a 5-4 lead. Eric Brown came on for Cecil to retire the final batter and stop the bleeding. He went on to pitch shut-out ball for the final two innings.
Essex starting pitcher Greg Myers was able to hold that lead until the eight, when lead-off batter Morgan Barger doubled off the center-field fence and was driven in by a Greg Depanfillis double down the left-field line to knot the score. Matt Cleary provided a third double to drive in the eventual winning run and force Myers from the game. Reliever Manny Prassinas was greeted by Josh Tatnall and Gabe Fellin, both of whom singled, adding two insurance runs. On the day, Fellin had 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored; Tatnall had 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
Cecil improves to 8-3 in conference, 20-12 overall. Essex drops to 9-4, 15-8.

Seahawks Earn Split with Rappahannock CC
On Saturday, March 31st, in a doubleheader where runs were at a premium, the Cecil Baseball team earned a split against the visiting Gulls of Rappahannock CC, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second 2-1. Read More.
Cecil starter Jordan Santak pitched well in the opener, scattering four singles and a double, while walking one and hitting one batter. And his teammates gave him some early run support, scoring twice in the first inning. Logan Engle got it started with a single, Josh Hampton was hit by a pitch, and Joel Buchko singled, loading the bases. Morgan Barger walked to force in a run, and Josh Tatnall brought in another with a sacrifice fly to center. However, that concluded the Cecil scoring for the game, as the Gull's starter, John Paxson, shut out Cecil the rest of the way, allowing only two runners on base in the final six innings.
Santak's efforts were to a great extent undone by three Cecil errors, which led to all three runs the visitors scored. In the third, the Gull's Josh Perry doubled and scored when Ben Beacorn's grounder was misplayed. In the fourth, another error on a grounder put leadoff hitter Bryce Lee on base; after advancing on Ben Parker's sacrifice bunt, Lee scored on Ben Delgado's single to tie the game. Then, in the fifth, Ricky Castro got on with an infield hit, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on yet another misplayed grounder to give Rappahannock a 3-2 lead that they would keep. Cecil had two chances to score more runs. With one out in the third, Joel Buchko doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. In the seventh inning, Matt Armour's single to right with two outs was misplayed, and he advanced to second. But in each instance, Paxson hung tough and got out of the jam.
Game two was another low-scoring affair with two dominating pitchers, Rappahannock's Louis Singleton and Cecil's Cody Albright locking horns. The Seahawks' 2-1 victory came on the strong right arm of Albright, who allowed just three singles and one walk while fanning eight and facing only 25 batters in the seven-inning game. Singleton, in turn, yielded two singles and a double and struck out five, but he walked three and hit a batter.
The Gulls struck first in the fourth frame when Bryce Lee walked, advanced on a ground-ball out, and scored on a single to right by Josh Crawford. A single by Bubby Miles put two on and set the stage for a bigger inning, but Cecil catcher Tyler Albert cut down Miles trying to steal second and ended both the inning, as well as the Gulls' scoring for the rest of the game. The Seahawks immediately tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Albert walked, alertly advanced all the way to third on an infield single by Joel Buchko, and scored on a Matt Cleary single to left. The only other offense either team could muster came in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Hampton led off with a walk, was advanced by Albert's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Paul Groff's long double to right-center. "It was a fastball on the outer half," said Groff. "I was looking for the outer half. He gave it to me and I hit it to the right-center gap." Groff's hit spurred on Albright, who noted, "I was on top of my stuff today. I felt strong, and that run in the sixth really gave me momentum."
Cecil coach Charlie O'Brien was disappointed with the first game, stating that the team had been
hitting well all week until this game. But he added that Santak's pitching performance, even with
only two runs backing him up, should have produced a win. Of Groff's winning hit in game two,
O'Brien said, "PJ coming up with that big hit, that's huge. He didn't have a really good day, but
he's the type of kid who is scrappy, keeps working, keeps working." The Seahawks will all keep
working, travelling to Hagerstown CC for a doubleheader on April 1.
Cecil now stands at 6-2 in conference, 18-11 overall.

Seahawks Hang On To Defeat Sullivan County CC
Clinging to a one-run lead with two outs and the bases loaded, the Cecil CC baseball team was on the verge of giving up a large lead on Friday, March 30th and suffering its second last-inning defeat in five days. The previous Sunday, Niagara County CC overcame a four-run deficit to defeat the Seahawks in the last (seventh) inning. This time, Cecil took a five-run advantage into the ninth and barely managed to weather a furious comeback attempt by Sullivan, 9-8. Read More.
Cecil started the scoring with a run in the first when Josh Hampton singled, advanced to third on errors, and was driven in by Paul Groff's single. In the fourth, Logan Engle singled, stole second, and scored on Gabe Fellin's single. The Seahawks added four more in the fifth when Hampton singled to lead off, stole second and advanced to third on an overthrow, then scored on a wild pitch. After Groff was hit by a pitch, Matt Cleary and Matthew Armour walked, and Josh Tatnall singled to center to drive in two. Logan Engle's single to right-center drove in one more and gave the Seahawks a 6-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Cecil starter Ian Cole was shutting out Sullivan through the first five innings. But they got to him in the sixth. After Troy Loparco walked, Jossue Delgado was hit by a pitch, and Corey Hamula singled to load the bases, a pitch in the dirt allowed Loparco to score. Dominique Parra's double to right-center drove in two more, and Jake Schilling's single down the third-base line brought in one more, cutting the lead to 6-4. The Seahawks answered quickly in their half of the sixth when Hampton led off with a single and eventually scored on Groff's infield single. They added two more in the seventh on a Scott Rhoades walk, a double by Hampton, and a single by Tyler Albert, making it a 9-4 game.
Eric Brown, who relieved Cole in the seventh, was followed by Hunter Ressler in the eight, and both kept the Sullivan batters at bay. However, Jarrett Shaffer, who came on in the ninth, ran into trouble. After retiring the first two batters, he gave up singles to Richard Reina and Delgado and a three-run homer to Hamula, which was followed by a solo homer by Pedro Mena, and suddenly Cecil found itself with just a one-run lead. Two singles by Michael Gonzalez and Stephan Sunday and a walk to Schilling loaded the bases. But Shaffer was able to get the final out and preserve the win.
Cecil's sophomore third-baseman Josh Hampton, who yesterday hit two home-runs and two doubles while driving in eight runs in a rout of Prince George's CC, stayed hot at the plate with two singles, a double, an rbi, and four runs scored. The Seahawks, now 5-2 in conference and 17-10 overall, have a five-game winning streak.

Seahawks Downed Twice by Niagara County CC
The Cecil baseball team dropped both ends of a Sunday double-header to visiting Niagara County CC in two very different ways. One involved dominating for six innings, only to lose a four-run lead in the last inning; the other, being shut out by a dominating pitcher for all seven innings. Read More.
In the opener, all the scoring through the first six innings belonged to the Seahawks, and it came in the third. Josh Tatnall led off the inning with a solo home run, and after Michael Defeo's single and Gabe Fellin's walk, Josh Hampton powered a three-run homer to left-center to give Cecil a 4-0 lead. And it seemed as though that was all Cecil starter Jordan Santak would need. Through the first six frames, the right-hander allowed no hits. The only Niagara base runners got on by way of two walks, a hit batter, and an error.
But in the seventh, it all fell apart. The first three Niagara batters, Ernie Kirkwood, Mike Elwood, and Jake Meehan, all singled to load the bases. It appeared that Santak would regain control, as he fanned the next two batters, but Michael Orlowski singled to right, driving in two runs and cutting the lead in half. After a walk to T.J. Giczkowski loaded the bases, Santak was relieved by Ian Cole. A pitch in the dirt allowed another run to score. Then came the dagger, as Dylan Baun hit a three-run home run to left-center, giving the visitors a 6-4 lead. The Seahawks tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh, when Tatnall got a lead-off walk, Matthew Armour singled to deep center, and Fellin advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Paul Groff's infield single narrowed the margin to 6-5, but Niagara's Adam Curyto retired the final two batters to end the game.
Game two featured an outstanding pitching performance by Niagara's Brandon Bielecki, who shut down the Cecil offense with a 3-0 shutout. Bielecki allowed only five runners to reach base, one of whom was erased when he tried to stretch a single into a double. He faced only 25 batters and threw just 77 pitches in the seven-inning complete game. Doubles by Paul Groff and Morgan Barger and a single by Josh Hampton were the only hits Cecil could muster. Bielecki's counterpart, Cecil's Cody Albright, also pitched well, but some early control problems cost him a run in the first inning. After Michael Orlowski led off with a single and and T.J. Giczkowski reached on an error, Albright hit the next two batters, Cal Sluberski and Mike Elwood, to bring in a run. In the fourth, an Ernie Kirkwood walk, a hit-and-run single by Elwood, and a Jake Meehan ground-out brought in another run. A seventh-inning solo homer by Matt Notaro closed out the scoring for the game.
Cecil's record now stands at 10-9 overall.

Seahawks Win Close One over Harford CC
The Cecil baseball team broke the fourteen-game winning streak of the Harford Owls, taking a 5-3 win on Thursday, March 22nd at Cecil. Read More.
Harford scored an unearned run in the first when a misplayed fly to right put the leadoff batter, Jon McAllister, on second and a throwing error on the subsequent sacrifice bunt brought him home. But Cecil starter Richard O'Donald retired the next three batters to prevent further damage. The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on Harford starter Brandon Franke's control problems. Gabe Fellin led off with a walk and stole second and third, Paul Groff walked, and Josh Hampton singled in Fellin to tie the score. Two more walks to Joel Buchko and Morgan Barger brought in another run and gave Cecil a 2-1 lead. But Franke bore down at that point and got out of the inning, stranding three runners. He went on to silence the Seahawk bats, allowing just three hits and no walks for the next five innings.
Neither team could produce runs until the Owls evened the score in the fifth. McAllister led off with a single, advanced on an Anthony Ortiz sacrifice bunt, and scored on Kyle Lindsey's groundball single to right. They took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a Justin Malehorn single to left, an error on a groundball, a double steal, and a sacrifice fly by Norm Donkin. But this would end the visitors' scoring for the day, as Cecil reliever Jarrett Shaffer came on in the seventh and shut out the Owls the rest of the way, allowing just one single and two walks in the final three innings.
The seventh inning was the downfall for Franke. After picking off Fellin, who had led off with a walk, Franke walked Groff, hit Hampton with a pitch, and gave up a three-run home run over the left-center field fence to Buchko, giving Cecil a 5-3 lead that would hold up. Buchko said that he probably took some good pitches earlier in the game that he should have swung at. But with two on in the seventh and trailing by one, "I was just looking for a fast ball, and he threw me one, and I turned on it."
Although noting that it was nice to get the win, Cecil coach Charlie O'Brien said that his team needed improvement both in the field and at bat. "We committed some blunders in the field that cost us some runs," O'Brien said. He added, "When you come away with only two runs in the first inning when you have bases loaded and nobody out, that's tough." But the coach had high praise for his two pitchers, O'Donald and Shaffer, as well as for the opposing hurler, Franke.
The Seahawks are now 4-2 in conference, 12-8 overall. Harford now stands at 4-1, 17-5.

Seahawks Bounce Back, Sweep Two from Garrett
After dropping three games earlier in the week, the Cecil baseball team returned to its winning ways and took two from visiting Garrett College, 11-3 and 10-3. Read More.
A Joel Buchko double produced a run in the first, and a Paul Groff sacrifice fly, along with a Josh Hampton double in the third, added three more, giving the Seahawks an early 4-0 lead. Garrett responded in the fourth when a Michael Drake single, a Maurice Adams walk, a Jason Hepple line-drive double to left, a sacrifice fly by Andrew Mason, and a ground out by Sebastian Niemand brought in three. But in the bottom of the fourth, Cecil took charge with a six-run outburst. After Gabe Fellin's soft single to right with bases loaded brought in one run, Paul Groff drove a double to left-center, scoring three more. Josh Hampton followed with another double to drive in Groff, and Buchko singled in Hampton. Buchko added a solo home run to lead off the sixth and complete the scoring.
Buchko, with a single, double, two home runs, and five rbi's, was only part of the story in this game. Seahawk starter Brian Cherrington went the distance, scattering five hits and allowing only nine batters to reach base. He recorded eight strike-outs.
The second game followed a similar pattern. Trailing 1-0 going into the third, Garrett took the lead when they got runners on base via a hit batter and a walk, setting the stage for Jason Hepple's three-run homer. But as in the first game, Cecil responded immediately. In the bottom of the third, singles by Hampton, Buchko, and Morgan Barger scored one run, and a Jon Karns double, along with a Matthew Armour ground out, produced two more and gave the Seahawks 4-3 lead. And, as in game one, Cecil pitching shut down the Garrett batters for the rest of the game. This time, it was Cody Albright who dominated, allowing no hits or walks over the final four innings. The only Garrett base runner during that stretch, Michael Drake, reached base in the fifth on an error and was promptly eliminated on a short-to-second-to first double play. Meanwhile, the Seahawks padded their lead. A Paul Groff ground-out and a Hampton solo home run added two more in the fourth, and Armour's two-run homer and Buchko's two-run single in the fifth made it a 10-3 advantage. For the game, Albright gave up just three hits and, excluding that one error, allowed only six batters to get on base. He struck out eleven.
The complete games by Cherrington and Albright provided a lift to the Seahawks, who are in the midst of playing eleven games in an eight-day stretch. The Seahawks improve to 3-1 in conference, 9-7 overall. Garrett falls to 0-5, 4-7.

Seahawks Drop Double-Header to Potomac State
The home-standing Cecil College baseball team was overwhelmed by a hard-hitting Potomac State ball club on Wednesday, March 14th, dropping the first game 13-7 and the second, an abbreviated five-inning game, 15-1. Read More.
In the first game, the Seahawks wiped out a 2-1 Potomac State lead in the bottom of the third on a three-run Josh Hampton homer, but this would be their only lead of the game and would not last long. The visitors immediately responded in the top of the fourth by turning a walk, two hit batters, a sacrifice fly, and a two-run double by Zach Stolipher into three runs off of Cecil starter Richard O'Donald. Potomac State added one more in the fifth, increasing their lead to 6-4. But the sixth inning was the decisive one, as Potomac State batters converted two walks, a hit batter, an error, and three hits to score four off of Cecil reliever Jarrett Shaffer and three more off of his successor, Ian Cole, taking a commanding 13-4 lead. The big hits in this inning were a two-run double by Ryan LaRose and a three-run homer by Klye Mann. The Seahawk bats came alive again in the bottom of the seventh, when a Paul Groff single, a Hampton double, and a Joel Buchko home run closed out the scoring in the game. Brendan Miller, who went five complete innings, got the win for Potomac State, with relief from Billy Demersky.
The second game was no contest from the beginning, with Potomac State plating four runs in the opening inning and adding three more in the second, all off of Cecil starter Matt Adams. A parade of relief pitchers--Erik Brown, Hunter Ressler, Brian Cherrington, and Jordan Santak--would follow, but none could stem the tide as Potomac State scored at least two runs in each of the remaining three innings. Meanwhile, Cecil's bats were kept largely silent by Potomac State starter Jordan Bray, who yielded only two hits, both in the bottom of the first when Josh Hampton singled up the middle, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a Joel Buchko single to center. In the remaining four innings, Bray allowed a total of only three Seahawks to reach base.
Cecil now drops to 7-7 on the season. Potomac State improves to 5-6.

Dundalk Tops Cecil, 3-2
The Cecil College baseball team suffered a frustrating one-run home loss to CCBC-Dundalk Tuesday, March 13, in a game that featured fine pitching performances by both teams. Dundalk's Curtis Randall allowed one run in his five complete innings, and reliever Algenis Vargas held Cecil to one more run the rest of the way. Seahawk starter D.J. Park allowed three runs in seven and two-thirds innings before yielding to Jordan Santak. The two Sehawks combined for sixteen strikeouts, twelve by Park. Read More.
Cecil took a first-inning lead when Gabriel Fellin led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on Paul Groff's infield hit, and scored on a throwing error. Dundalk tied the game in the top of the fourth when Jeffri Batista was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on James Francis' single, and scored on Richard Morales' sacrifice fly.
The Seahawks had opportunities to regain the lead, but ended the fifth inning with Groff being gunned down at the plate trying to score on a base hit down the left-field line by Josh Hampton. They ended the sixth when Joel Buchko was doubled up at the plate trying to tag up on a fly ball.
Batista gave Dundalk a one-run advantage when he led off the seventh by reaching base on an error, advancing to second on a wild pitch, stealing third, and scoring on a Troy Davis single. Cecil responded immediately in the bottom of the frame when Josh Tatnall led off with a double, advanced to third on Fellin's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Groff's sacrifice fly. But when the next batter, Josh Hampton, was hit by a pitch and Joel Buchko followed with a double, both were left stranded, and the score remained tied.
Dundalk scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth off of consecutive singles by Batista, Francis, and Morales. Despite getting the first two batters on by way of an error and a walk in the bottom of the eighth, Cecil was unable to produce a run. And a Buchko double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth also went for naught.
Cecil Coach Charlie O'Brien noted that he has a lot of young players in the line-up and that offensively, "We try to do too much instead of just putting the ball in play. Too many situations when all we have to do, with one out and a guy on third, is put the ball in play and we'll get a run out of it." He added, "When you're playing conference ball against good teams, someone has to step up, and we just didn't step up offensively today."
Cecil now stands at 1-1 in conference, 5-4 overall. Dundalk improves to 3-0, 7-7.
